Oh my God you're right. I would yell at my oldest son who was about ten at the time "What on earth are you doing??? X that out right now. No more computer for you." and he would say "But mommy, I didn't do this on purpose." lol

I remember Gopher, Archie, Jughead, and Veronica, 96 baud modems, and Mosaic (which became Netscape, which became Mozilla) was a pipe dream that someday promised to show <GASP> images on the web!! That was as far out there as those little pads the Yeomen on Star Trek would hand Captain Kirk for him to sign off on something with.

At the time, it was all text based, Bulletin Boards, and USENET. I cannot even imagine what will be common place in 20 years.

I've been in the tech world since the Hollerith card/keypunching days, and I am amazed each year. Seriously, in a few decades you will be able to print out a car. Crazy shit coming.

this for sure, the content was wild but that’s what i miss about the “old internet” because it felt less restrictive in regards to content

the thing that grinds my gears is when a company makes a remaster of a really good classic game and it gets censored.. that’s what really turns some die hard fans away (just like what you see with some of these new hero movies)

you’ll never have voice chat like in call of duty modern warfare two either, people get banned on console for sending a message saying some light trash talk

those nostalgic feelings that everyone in this thread has should be capitalized on though, like i would buy products that were brought back to modern day, especially if they were updated, unaltered (censorship wise) and gave you that old school feeling that you missed
 
Even though my internet journey began with Windows XP, I still experience that nostalgia. I remember Newgrounds, Flash games, and the old Windows Messenger… all of that brings back a lot of memories.

Reading this thread really made me reminisce about the good old days on the internet. It was such an exciting and almost innocent time!

AOL/AIM days were great, especially for music communities and chats. This is how kids my age were talking after school.. somehow it seemed like everyone was on there.

Geocities websites were all over.

WinMX because everything else was slow and full of spyware. Eventually used limewire a lot. Burning mixtapes.

Yo, man, I totally get that nostalgia, tbh! It felt way more innocent because there were no algorithms serving you custom ads and tracking your every move. It was pure chaos, but fun chaos!

I definitely miss the time when websites were just brightly colored GeoCities pages designed by regular people, not billion-dollar corporations. And hearing that dial-up modem screech—that was the soundtrack to pure excitement, dude!
 
I'm OK with this one being resurrected.

Man, ICQ. I had a low number too. LOL

I also remember playing Everquest and someone pulling the modem cord so that they could use the phone, in the middle of a raid. Good times.
