oh merry army, aren't they jealous of each other, don't they attack each other? My cat sleeps all day and goes crazy at night. With four cats, I would go crazy not to mention the pleasant smell of the litter box

This is not true, for an example in China, Japan, South Korea lots of them own either cats or dogs. Quite also like me rearing Fishes.

I pet myself on the other hand. I like people as pets. But I would only practice pet attitude on nice, adult people.
Pets are overrated as one human will deliver as much as 1000 pets. Scaling humans is much more profitable long term if you consider they all have brains like you do.
IMO having 8 cats is not even as demanding as having one kid. Though the number sounds impressive.
