Do you need ID when purchasing a Smartphone with a plan?

You could always buy a fake ID if they do, or say you forgot it.

Assuming they are required to ask for ID, a prepaid phone (Virgin offers great plans) wouldn't require this process

PRO TIP: Act very suspicious. Pace the room back and forth and rub your hands together. Say random sentences in a foreign language and make darting eye movements. Wear a sweatshirt and sweatpants even though it is the middle of the summer. Carry around a large camping backpack and if they ask you about it say it's top secret. They will think you're a secret agent spy guy and spies are super cool so they won't ask for your ID. When you really think about it the plan is foolproof
 
Why are you asking this here. Can't you call them up and ask? Best foolproof method I can think of.
 
Things may have changed in recent years, but about 4 years back, I knew some friends whose parents were illegal immigrants and they all used Metro because they didn't have IDs. Go to some mall kiosk where they only care about the sale. If it comes up, tell them you don't have it on you. They'll probably just carry on to close the sale.
