Is it worth it nowadays? In the past, I bought them because of the "new backlinks justification". But, can Google check that they are fake? Can they hurt the website?

if that social signal is coming from good site is fine. but its coming from same sites again and again it consider as spam social signals.

You can use it for diversity links.

Worthy but instead of buying we can create own social links and use it unique and genuine. It always works good.
