Just a passing shower thought here...yeah I know...sad right....

I often hear people saying

"ooo watch that link velocity"
"don't build links too quickly at first"
"let your site settle for a few weeks then build links"

Surely link acquisition velocity will have natural highs and lows when companies do marketing campaigns? Are we saying a viral marketing campaign that a startup gets going will get a site penalised?

This just doesn't make sense to me.

Thoughts anyone?

same with press releases- all the content is the same but gets published all around the net- isnt that the same as copying

Doesn't exist. Just another construct made from SEO gods to keep your website in the lows. Controversial/viral stuff get a shit ton of new links in the first 24 hours then they just die down. If the website is completely new I would give it some time before I throw a shit ton of links

Legitimate viral marketing will be accompanied by a surge in searches. An unnatural link velocity can be easily detected since there's no apparent interest.

I seriously doubt that link velocity alone will get your site penalized, but it can easily trigger a manual review. And if your PBN doesn't pass, that very likely will lead to a penalty.

In my opinion, your link velocity must be justified.

For example if you gain 50,000 links in 2 days, it should have the proportional amount of shares, social signals, and traffic since the content has gone viral.

Another thing to note is that high link velocity should come from different domains, meaning, your referring domains should also increase in proportion. Don't get 50,000 links from 15 domains.

when you go on a link build campaign, throw in a pr release and social signals everywhere. google will believe the links have come from press distribution

"Google does use link growth trends to understand which websites try to manipulate their organic results. If your backlink profile grows too fast, you’re out. If you’re too slow, you won’t ever get on the first page.

Your goal is to understand: which link growth is “natural” in my niche, for my keyword, for my country"

What's the actual source of that information?

Link building speed must be accompanied by social signals.

They can detect when too many links appear without a reason.

If your site is featured on CNN and you get tons of links along with tons of traffic, it won't hurt because the traffic explains the links.

But if you suddenly get 100k links from a blast and nobody clicks those links and you don't get a spike in traffic, then the links are considered bad.

It's all about user behavior. I've posted about this several times.

I can only say, test, test, test.
Unless someone shares a study done on the same niche, is better to do your own research.
Get a (throwaway) domain in the same niche, add similar pages and go crazy with the backlinks.
While you are at it, try the same with web 2.0 properties.
Good luck.

I'm sure for the extremes it's easily detectable. For example as you said a GSA blast.

How do you think they measure direct traffic to work out the traffic/link ratio? Through GA or DNS in someway or chrome? Suppose it could be any and we'd never know.

Same way they're tracking everyone right now.

A combination of:
  • People using their DNS 8.8.8.8
  • Chrome
  • Analytics
  • Their Javascript CDN
  • Android phones
  • Their fonts CDN
  • Tag manager
  • Adsense
  • Browser malware site detection (Firefox and Chrome both use it)
To name just a few. There are probably more ways we don't know. Fact is Google knows where people are and what they're doing online.
