Do you believe in karma ?

How karma works

Something good happens to a good person = karma.

Something bad happens to a good person = just one of those things.

Something bad happens to a bad person = karma.

Something good happens to a bad person = just one of those things.

As you can see, the mystical Karma only exists as and when it suits.

A very subjective term.

When something bad happens to someone he/she dislikes or one who he/she is envious of: "Haha! Karma!"

When something bad happens to the victim instead or someone 'good' he/she knows: "Damn... bad luck." or "Aww, it is just a test from the Heavens. Good things will come soon." Or "God, why me?"

I never believe in Karma.

Say, if your most hated enemy contracts a terminal illness... you (or someone else) will be dancing in joy or snicker and say "Karma" with a smirk on your face. But if something good happens to your enemy while something bad happens to you instead, you will go ranting and cursing about how unfair life is.

Life's about probabilities. When an unfortunate thing has happen it just means you've landed on the 'bad side' of probability. And when an enemy lands on the bad side of probability (i.e. contracting some illness, accident, .etc) , we will use the word "Karma" very freely; not realising that you could also end up on the same bad side of probability (bad luck) sooner or later.

Life's never fair. Get used to it and don't bother comparing your life to someone else's because "Comparison Is the Thief of Joy". Be true to yourself. Just because someone is doing evil and nothing bad has happened to him/her doesn't mean you should do the same. And when I donate or do something generous, I don't expect any returns. If you're donating and doing good deeds, but expecting positive returns (hence, the term 'good karma') later it just means you're a phoney. It's like some people turning to religion just because they fear hell or just want to get to heaven (I don't want to go in-depth about religion as it is against the rules). You're not true to yourself and to others.

However, it doesn't mean I will voice out and start commenting that person is being a phoney when he/she instagrams or brags to everyone when he/she does a good deed. The reason is because at least the receiving end is benefiting from it, despite it wasn't genuine.

Just my opinion.

Just do good to others. You will be rewarded.
Unless of course you're Pol Pot, Stalin, Jimmy Savile etc then you can do bad to others and be rewarded. So that kind of kills that silly statement.

Yes.
That's why always trow a good thing in your life.
Then a good thing will bounce to you back.
Vice versa.
Exp: Positive thinking, donation, avoid revenge(let the karma do the work) and da da da...

Actually it is quite complex. There is concept of rebirth involved.

Yep there goes another unprovable statement. Anyway not really sure what the OP's motive was for posting this but it's bound to degenerate into proof vs faith at some point and be closed.

My motive was to know the opinion of other members about this.

I could go on and say that we're all programmed since we're born to behave in a certain way. Remember Pavlov's classical conditioning? Your parents instil certain beliefs and reward you accordingly (negative or positive reinforcements) so it becomes a habit. And habits eventually forms your character. It makes you behave that way afterwards. That's why I believe no one ever does something good (or bad) for no reason. That "feel good" feeling is just brought up by your subconscious self that's instiled from your childhood. Or you captured the moment that 'good begets good' either from stories, movies, religious texts, or somewhere in your childhood so you are expecting something good in return. Perhaps your brain is expecting it consciously (a.k.a: let's do this for good karma and good returns later); or subconsciously ('the feel good feeling that's brought by years of positive reinforcement from childhood'). And when you really do receive something good after doing the good deed, it reaffirms that positive reinforcement and belief.

The same can happen when bad parenting is done on children. They became spoilt brats, intolerant of others, inconsiderate of other people's feelings, .etc.

That's why I always feel parenting is very important. Or empathy, and nothing builds empathy as strong as experiencing it yourself.

Am I saying humans don't have freewill? Are we all programmed like software and bots? I don't know.

Just my opinion. I'm not referring or attacking anyone. And no, I don't hold on to it. I question everything and reflect about it. And as cynical as it sounds I'm not. Sorry if it offends. Okay, I will shut up now. Just stay positive and happy :)

There is no such thing as karma. Bad people do bad things and get away with it. However frequently their strength becomes their weakness and this is seen as karma.

For example a greedy person steals from you. There is no karma he stole it you lost it. But later down the line he steals from someone else and they were the wrong people to steal from and kill them. They get away with killing him. But later down the line pick a fight with someone who is stronger than them and they get killed.

Hubris is usually what people mistake for karma and it is hubris that does for you.

Sarah O'Connor once said: "There is no faith"
(as a destiny, not as religion thing)

if she said so -> no karma ;)

Nice to hear opinion of so many people. Most of the members expressed against it and I respect their opinion. I am not an expert at this. But as I mentioned in a comment above there is concept of re-birth involved.

Let me explain it with an example. One of the most important things that determines what will you achieve in life is the family where you are born. So as per karma, a person doing good deeds has higher chnaces of getting born in an educated and prosperous family in next birth. Sometimes, we can see effect of karma in current life as well.

You talk about rebirth as if it's fact. It isn't.

I don't believe in Karma no. It's a bit of a silly concept if you actually sit back and think about it rationally. However, I do believe that those that live by the sword often die by it; or more broadly, actions have consequences and if you engage in say illegal actions enough, put yourself in danger often or eat rubbish food enough you put yourself in the cross-hairs of statistically likely consequence.

I also believe in good manners and universally preferable moral behaviours. Not because I can't achieve specific goals by being a d*ck, but because I want to live in a world in which people treat each others respectfully and look to achieve goals without coercion or force. The only way for me to achieve that is to lead by example and send out 'ripples' that influence those around me whilst I become a character worthy of emulation. So it indirectly follows the principles of Karma (in so much as I give out what I wish to receive in return - respect, trust, goodwill and appreciation), however, It's not out of fear of an unseen force, but out of the selfish desire to live in a world with higher standards.

Most people don't get there is a fine difference between karma and consequence.
Aka the difference between karma and "action and reaction".

If I throw a ball in the air and it comes back down. Is it then karma?

If you insult people on the streets and someone beats you up for it.
Its karma.
Or is it consequence?

Every action has a reaction. If you expand the actions there are more reactions.
If you increase the number of "bad actions" you increase the likelyhood of "bad reactions".
Same goes for "good" actions.
There are visible and unvisible reactions but you only count the visible ones.

If a hitman kills 1000 people and he get shoot most people would say its karma.
But you only count the 1 visible reaction the one that killed him.
There are still 999 dead people aka 999 actions incomparison to 1 reaction.

I'm not superstitious but i do believe in karma! I see life as a cycle. Every deliberate action you take will soon or later come back to you! So i try to stay positive as much as possible!:)
