Do web designers need to know php too?

I thought web designers only needed to know html and photoshop ?? My friend told me that i also need to know stuff like php and javascript and i was like wut!!? Aren't they for web developers only??

Web designers can make really nice sites by knowing just html+css. php and js are not needed unless you need functions.

Knowing PHP or any other programming may guarantee you to create nice websites,but that does not guarantee that you make a single penny with those skills unless someone pays you for the work you do.What you need is the marketing skills,ie skills in writing good Content in English as wordpress Posts which dont even require 10th Grade technical skills.It feels so much amazing to know that those people who dont even know the basics of programming language and any technical skills is making a killing and those programmers and Web devolopers after working for so many years under someone dont've absolutely any clue on how to make money online.Quite amazing indeed!Indeed this world is designed for the Stupid people to stay stupid inspite of the knowledge they posses.I saw many technically sound good PHP and Javascript guys donot even make a single penny if they dont've a job and 10th Grade Fail Internet Marketing making several 1000's a day with absolutely no Technical knowledge.And if you want to create some nice looking websites,just've a lookout for Slaves(Job seekers). They're ready to do the Dirty work for you for as little as a couple of $ if you hire someone as a freelancer or as a full time from countries like India,Philippines. System is designed in such a way so that smart Lazy people sit back and reap the rewards and Slaves do the dirty work for us.

FOr some of the work they should no programming a bit but its not necessary

It is not necessary that a web designer should know PHP or JS. It is because PHP and JS are used for additional functions used on the website.

Our lead developer is proficient in PHP, ASP classic, ASP.net, JavaScript, MySQL, UNIX, GREP, etc. He does back-end such as developing content management systems. He is familiar with PhotoShop.

Our strictly front-end developers are required to know HTML5 and CSS3 inside and out. They also need to be familiar with, but not masters of, JavaScript, ASP, PHP, and MySQL.

Does anyone know of any good - preferably free places to learn web design online? I have been thinking of trying to become one but I don't have a lot of money to pay for an expensive course.
Although I have been thinking web design might not be in demand very much anymore because wordpress is so easy to use.

I would like to note that I Design Websites and Know just enuff to edit php,html,css. My Background is Server setups "MCSE, CCNA, A+, S+, N+. I know photoshop and work with open source software. So if your asking if you need to know any programing at all: No!. But if you want to do custom work then: Yes!

Use wordpress themes unless you're willing to pick up stuffs then google for net tutsplus, they have everything there.

its not necessary for web designer to learn php. if you know then you can creat a good website with many function which are only built in php. knowing php as a web designer is a plus point.
