Do unrelated posts affect ranking? Broad niche site.

I was looking for news about a certain celebrity and I saw a website that was on the first page of google, it was a Tech website that did tech reviews and news but then it also has a "culture" subcategory where it posts celebrity news, viral stuff etc etc.

It seemed to do well so I wondered if it was a viable option if you wanted to get as much traffic as possible or if it will affect your rankings in any way. I am still studying SEO so I do not know the answer to this yet and would appreciate if someone answered.
