Their algo relies far more on title, desc , captions, watch time, and CTR. That said adding a few relevant tags doesn’t hurt, but don’t expect them to boost views on their own.

YouTube tags no longer carry much weight but they're not completely useless either.

Tags are good for categorization, however what's more impactful is the titles, youtube suggests videos based on keywords of a high blowing up video, for example if a video titled "Logan Paul is facing charges for crypto scam" is trending, then videos related to these titles and subject are mostly suggested alongside this trending topic. However tags do help in more targeted audience, but not necessarily reach.
 
It is not as effective as it used to be, but I think it is still useful to use.
 
Tags now mainly help with correcting spelling variations or clarifying context for rare topics. They won’t hurt but stuffing them won’t boost rankings.
 
I feel.that they are still important. Same type of content when posted with diverse related tags will get more views.
