Do Subdomains rank as good as .com/.net?

Got a question..
Does subdomains can rank as good as normal .com domain? in terms of seo..
And is subdomain considered as brand new domain non attached to the main domain in any link value or it takes some juice from the main domain as well ?

Wanted to do some keyword testing, but it would be a lot cheaper just to buy one short .com and create on it 100subdomains then buying 100 .infos -

Anyone can confirm that subdomains can get ranked as good as normal domains?

I can verify that a subdomain can rank #1 in google. I have a wordpress blog on someone elses WPMU site. It ranks #1 for a term that has 8k searches per month. I have 3 other blogs that are set up on other MPU's for the same term and they float between pg1 and pg2 of Google. It was part of an experiment. I set up 10 sites using the same content and keywords on 10 WPMU sites and started promoting them. I got on the 1st page of Google with 3 of them within weeks, the rest never got above page 2. I picked one of the three winners and started building tons of backlinks - bought some Web 2.0 links, paid for some 100 social bookmarks and built a few hundred links myself using BMD and blog commenting. It took 2 years, but I got #1 in G and it has stuck for more than 6 months. I can tell you that I think having ebay listings on my blogs was holding me back. I couldn't get above #6 in Google for the longest time. When ebay changed their EPN terms I had to remove my ebay listings - then POOF! #1 search result in G within the week. Now it has adsense on it. I only make about .50 a day off it, but it is more than I was making off ebay commissions.

I don't really think it matters whether it is a subdomain or a page within a domain, you build enough backlinks and it will rank well (with the exception of Ebay sites ).

the simple answer is yes they can

If my blog posts can rank for #1 for some keywords then I guess sub-domains should be able to also.

Does anyone have experience using subdomains vs. a new directory for niches? The idea/theme of the site would essentially the same, however say the content is drastically different. I'm concerned about the SEO impact that different content would have on a "main site", as opposed to a subdomain, which is treated as a separate site.

For example, let's say you have a car website. Would you use audi.cars.com or cars.com/audi? A different page would be something like bmw.cars.com or cars.com/bmw.

It seems like having it all bunched together would really benefit as far as PR and backlinks go, but some pages would be sales oriented and some would be content/advertising based.
