I have an opportunity to get viewers from countries poorer countries in Asia and South America.
However I currently have a real fanbase of UK and USA viewers, I'm worried I could destroy my ranking and video performance by having more viewers from low tier counties than high tier.

Would it be a bad idea to get viewers from these countries?

I feel like if its from India and the channel is us based then yes you will be in the india recommended

I am facing the other way around: I have an european + latin american channel that is getting traffic from the US and Canada from a specific video. The problem is you are feeding YT's algo with information from other audiences that are not your target, so it is going to impact on YT interpretation of what public has more engagement with your content. CPM is also different, so don't expect the same views/money ratio.

I was thinking about buying cheap ads buy having them viewed in poorer countries but the issue is it might affect my ranking. I know the viewers will stick around but I fear that if my CPM drops then Youtube will no longer want to push my content in the algorithm.

I think you are right. But, I don't have experience doing YT ads for that purpose.
