i have spent the last couple months building some links for my website and when i do a backlink check with semrush, we have a good amount of backlinks, however when i look in google search console it says we only have 2 links to our site, are the links in GSC the only ones that give my website authority or do the others matter too? if this is the case will i need to wait for google scrape the links till they have any effect?

GSC only shows you what you have, it doesn't directly impact your rankings most of the time. And you can easily verify this by keeping an eye on your rankings. Check if the links are indexed in google and if they are, check your rankings and you'll see that it doesn't matter what GSC shows you.

And GSC is slow in picking up links anyway, so don't wait for them to show you the links, it might never happen if you have 100s of 1000s of them. Just make sure that they're good links, capable of moving the rankings, otherwise it doesn't matter whether or not GSC shows them

GSC does not show all links, it shows a sample.
It is worth analyzing links in GSC for backlink types as some signals.
For example, if you've added 100 backlinks from a PBN network to a money site, and none of those backlinks show up in GSC in a month, it probably means that that PBN network is being ignored by Google.

It doesn't matter much. GSC will take time to catch the backlinks and it won't affect the rankings mostly.

Google Search Console may not capture all your backlinks immediately. While it shows only a few, other tools like SEMrush might reflect a more comprehensive list. Be patient, as Google may take time to index and recognize all your links, and their impact will gradually be seen.

For all those who are saying GSC don't matter. Are you sure about that? Isn't GSC a direct subsidiary of Google indexing bot. So if Google bot indexes something, GSC should show it.
Or am I wrong in that impression.

What kinds of links have you built? Please check whether those links are indexed. If they're not indexed, they won't show up in Google Search Console. I'm concerned that Semrush might be showing you backlink data that doesn't accurately reflect your actual links. Remember, if links aren't indexed, they won't have their intended impact on your site's authority or visibility in GSC.

It will take time for GSC to catch the backlinks, so rankings won't be affected much.

If backlink is indexed it matters if it's not it doesn't matter, simple as.
To find out go to Google and search
Site:
Followed by your backlink.

The algorithm for getting links into the console is slightly imperfect. The links that Google will get there are links that Google found from trusted sources, or resources in the knowledge column, or where the page with the link was frequently visited by people and got to someone in the CRUX report.

And when calculating your site ranking, Google takes into account all indexed links, and processes them, not just the ones I wrote above (some of them he will ignore as garbage, but some of them will not, and they will not get into the console all the same).

Using tools like SEMrush to measure your site's performance may not yield accurate results As an alternative, Google Search Console is a better option, but it works with patience. So, you should create high-quality content that follows Google's guidelines, and spend money to buying in good quality links. This will help you boost your site's traffic and rankings over time.

sometimes even unindexed backlinks show up in GSC

GSC will take sometime to catch all your backlinks, However it will not affect your rankings mostly.

Google is monopoly and they don't disclose you everything what they have in their DB or repository which you want to know or expect.. the same time they cannot hide completely as well so what you see might be tip of iceberg in all manners like links/issues/index/imperssions/clicks on GSC.. you just start work on the real plan and dont reply fully on this GSC... from what i could is.. take the kws suggestions from the GSC which is a gold mine for your longer plan

GSC might not capture all the backlinks, it's common for Google to take time to discover and index them.

Sometimes boosting your backlinks from PBN google will not take it because GCS suggest PBN is not that much effective
