Do .nets rank well?

Depend on what your site is about..

If you have business site then .net
if you are charity or some type of helping site then .org

If it has good content, anything will rank well.

This. Country TLD's are preferable if aiming for a specific country, but anything after that comes down to individual site visitor's preference. And that's something we cannot affect.

i have found that it does not really matter what the domain extension is only how well optimized the site is. i have ranked using all extension types.

any TLD ranks if you know how to do it. I'm ranking with .info and .ws over hundreds of .com's nad stuff

I'm also ranking with a lot of .info domains. It's just about the content these days ... I don't think a .com extension has a lot of extra weight anymore in the search engine algorithms

Pxoxrxn,

Tactics for ranking any TLD are not really going to be different nor will you have more success with one over the other in the eyes of search engines. If content is relevant to a user's query and the page is in an engine's index, it will show it to them with its .com, .org, .net or dot whatever. The real difference comes from the users point of view of what that site is all about. As mentioned by previous members, users have different feelings about the TLD's they see (whether they know it or not). I would argue that most people don't even realize there are TLD's beyond .com and .org. .Net is one of the more commonly used TLD's so I think you will be alright using it. In terms of software ranking your site based on what it sees of content and architecture, it will make no difference.

This thread on SEOMoz speaks more to this subject,

This study done by SEOMoz back in 2010 however would seem to contradict what I have just said. They analyzed over 11,000 search results and the data related to TLD's shows that .com EMD's seemed to rank higher in SERP's more frequently than other TLD's.

I hope this hasn't confused you further. I think the overall thought here is that if you can get the .com domain that is great but if the .net is the only one available, you can probably still outrank the .com with some effort, especially if the .com is not doing anything to get ahead in SERP's.

take the .com first, if you can't get that then go .org, then .net
