Do .nets rank well?

Hey everyone, I found an exact match .net with 30k global searches. No other domain that's ranking has the keyword in it and the .com redirects. Is there a good chance that I could rank for this term?

Or am I better off going with a .org?
 
if the .com is not optimized, the .net can rank almost as well as .com. I've had many .com domains that could not yet make it to the first place and some .net thank ranked very easily. If you use proper inpage optimization, with unique content and adequate linkwheels and diverse backward links, in a low competition niche you can rank easy :)
 
If .com is taken, I prefer .org. I've had better results with .org than with .net

How do you get better results? With .com with one extra character (an extranumber: thedomainyouwant2.com for instance) of a .net exact keyword?
I get better results with a .net exact than a .com with extra character.
Of course you cannot beat a pure .com. I remember the contest "blackhatworld rocks" and I think the top domain was blackhatworldrocks.com! So .com pure domains are more easy to rank for, but, of you cannot buy the .com and the existing .com does not have any inpage and outpage SEO, the .net will rank as well!
I have beaten the "Sony" website for a hot product of theirs with a .net domain!
 
If .com is not avaible then I prefer more .org then .net but they're not much different
 
.net isn't a first choice but its a case by case situation. 30K searches shows great potential for any website if you monetize it correctly. Research and testing are a must.

I agree whole heartedly. In the eyes of the search engines the extension has no real relevance. The only reason to go for a .com is because of type in traffic. If going for search results it makes no difference whatsoever.
 
Obviously you want to stick with the big three (.com/.net/.org). Many people see .org as a third option but .org domains are seen as "organizations" and for no reason at all appear to be more trustworthy to consumers. So in my opinion, .org over .net.
 
If your website has relevant content and you're able to build great backlinks, then the domain extension will not have anything to do with your rankings. I have 100% confidence that you'll be fine with your .net :)
 
Domain extension has little no relevance in terms of ranking with the exception of when its a geographic based extension, e.g. co.uk wont rank so well in the USA.

I have sites ranked with .me, .me.uk, .co, .pro., .gb.net, .org.uk and honestly can't tell the difference between ranking a .com or other extension.

Although I have moved away from using EMD's now and tend to go for something that sounds right but still contains the emd.
