Do Long Form Videos Still Outperform Shorts for Monetization?

With Shorts getting massive reach, are they actually generating meaningful revenue compared to traditional long-form videos?
In general, longer videos tend to generate better advertising revenue than shorter videos (higher CPM/RPM, allowing for more ads to be inserted). Longer videos (>8-10 minutes) help keep viewers engaged longer, increasing overall watch time and optimizing sustainable revenue. Short videos (Shorts/Reels) have the advantage of rapid reach and brand building, but the revenue per view is very low.

I still prefer watching longer videos because I can fully experience the content that the creator has to offer.

Shorts definitely bring **massive reach and fast subscriber growth**, but in terms of **direct revenue**, long-form videos still tend to win. The ad revenue from Shorts is generally much lower because the revenue is pooled and shared across creators, so even millions of views might only generate modest earnings compared to a well-monetized long video. Where Shorts really shine is **top-of-funnel traffic**they’re great for building an audience quickly, pushing viewers to long-form content, promoting affiliates, or driving traffic to other platforms. Many creators now use a **hybrid strategy**: Shorts for discovery and virality, and long-form videos for deeper engagement and stronger monetization.

Shorts get massive views in order for your channel to get discovered. Long form videos are the ones you should serve your audience because they build start and get monetized better. But you first have to be discovered before you can actually monetize the slice of traffic coming so for this reason you do need shorts. So basically shorts for getting more eyeballs and subscribers to your channel, once they are subscribed you can serve them long form videos = profit.

Yes, in most cases long-form videos still outperform Shorts for monetization. They allow mid-roll ads, usually have higher CPMs, and generate more watch time.

you see guys on here posting 30k+ revenue screenshots from a single account. For sure there is money. I think never has there been more people doing YT.

Long form videos continue to provide a much higher revenue per mille compared to short form content because the advertising structure allows for multiple mid roll placements and higher quality brand deals. While shorts are excellent for rapid audience growth and brand awareness the actual payout from the creator fund is usually very low for most channels in 2026. You should use shorts as a discovery tool to funnel viewers toward your longer content where the engagement is deeper and the monetization options are more diverse. Most successful creators focus on a balanced strategy where long videos drive the primary income while shorts maintain the channel momentum and reach new demographics.

I think Shorts are mainly made for reach and bringing in new audiences, which is why they can indirectly affect the revenue from long-form videos by bringing new viewers to the channel.

At the same time, the direct income from Shorts is usually much lower than from long videos. Personally, I prefer long-form videos because they don’t ruin my concentration)

Yeah shorts gets actually more views than long form videos. I just created my channel recently and only shorts get high views while long form doesn’t

Have you thought about the budget you need for each of them?
