Do link-protected links count as a backlink?

Hi,

I have a really quick question that just occurred to me: do protected outbound links on a site (like for example when someone posts a link here on BHW or Odesk has something similar) count as a backlink? Or does the redirect script or whatever make them worthless in terms of SEO?
