Do link directories make money?

I know that there are a billion (and one ) questions on how to make money on this forums, but mines a little more specific.

I have an awesome idea that requires a script that can make money that would be lucrative for people to use (because of making money possibility)

I was considering a CashBack script, but there isn't a free one that you can give out. Then I thought of a link directory....

Do link directories make a fair amount of $$$? If I'm wasting my time, please let me know, but if not, would someone with experience in this area mind giving a little overview/tutorial... I'll be your best friend . If you don't want to post it publicly, pm me and we'll try to work things out.

I'm sure they do...or else why would there be so many of them? I think it is just a difficult thing to make money with, since there are so many of them.

I had vast*directory.c0m, and beside the $12 in Adsense, didn't made me any money so I sold it. Of course, all depends how you promote it and if you have paid subscriptions. We used FreeGlobes and couldn't use the paid subscriptions module.
