I have 500 plus images and their names are random like image-1. It will take lot of time to rename fienames. And if I do that, images will first get deindexed as their permalink will also be changed. So is it worth the effort or alt text matters more compared to filename?

if you're already ranking I don't think it's worth the trouble.

I've heard 3-4 years ago that image filenames were a ranking factor, but even then it wasn't a big factor, it was just one of those minor on-page things you must do to improve your SEO score. But I don't know if this is still an important factor, so I wouldn't sacrifice the current rankings (even if they're on pages 2-3 of google) just to change the name of a file. You'll see better impact by investing in 5-10 good links pointed to your important pages than by changing the file names...

Image file names are important when looking at the code they are a link to that image so if you have a descriptive name for the image it does help Google better understand what that image is. ALT tags are for accessibility and should be used 100% of the time. Don't keyword stuff them, but don't be afraid to utilize ALT tags for keywords as long as they are helpful to the user. wish u luck

I gotta agree with the reply above me. Keep them but work on future material because it's just easier.

But don't rely or expect much from just naming images correctly, either.
