I'm doing keyword research for my first niche blog. Got some niche ideas and jumped to ahrefs to check the competitors. And, for sure, I'm a little surprised.

First of all, I'm planning to make a blog in brazillian portuguese, as this is my native language. So, I'm checking only my local competitiors. The funny thing is: it is really hard to find real niche competition here!

For the most searches, the top results are review focused affiliate websites, with DRs as low as 0. I'll give you an example (not my real niche):

"best washing machines"

Keyword difficulty 0
Monthly volume 2.3K

Only the first result is a big website, famous for price comparisson. Then we got:

- Reviews website | DR 4
- Reviews website | DR 0
- Reviews website | DR 16
- Reviews website | DR 3

And so on...

My question is: with this kind of low grade competition, should I really start a niche website about home appliances? Or should I go for a broader reviews website and try to rank in some long tail keywords?

Or Ahrefs simply doesn't works well for non-english websites?

These tools are going to tell you the exact competition unless you try to rank that keyword.

If Your site is new You should start with long tail keys to start seeing some traction

If the site is brand new , feed it with content often and make content rich aritcles , if You competition it's crappy You Will become an authority on the niche

This is exactly what I plan to do. But first, I have to choose how big do I want my niche to be. And that's my problem right now.

At first, I thought about "kitchenware", for example. But "home appliances" are low competition too. And then I find that "dinning room furniture" have bunch of easy keywords...

Should I make a website about kitchenware as I've planned? Or should I make a review website with broader focus, with arcticles that range from knifes, to refrigerators, to sofás, to mattresses etc.?

You Will find new keywords to rank on as You start to get traffic , Your site will grow as you start to fill the gaps

I would do this

1) Go broad. Make a website that seem very friendly to read with engaging consumer information & updates

2) Get those long-tail pages you talk about

3) Create content to post on other sites, that's constantly referring to you as the official source for reviews/information

4) Keep the social media pumping !

Based on the information that you have shared with us, it seems that the best way forward is to go with a domain that can cover a wide area including several niches.

With that said, your first set of posts must be specific to the first niche that you're targeting.

You shouldn't even target a whole niche; find a sub-niche that you can dominate.

And once you're able to do that, start spreading to other areas of that niche.

And once you start ranking and you get a nice wide coverage, start exploring other niches.

You have to build your blog empire on a solid foundation.

Just because your competitors look weak and badly targeted doesn’t mean that you will have an easy time.

There's a reason why they're ranking as high as they are; it’s much better to play it safe when you're just starting out.

Shopping is a niche in itself,
you can go with a general niche if you do find good keywords as you do,
Make sure that the keywords are really easy to rank for (check top websites onpage, nb of pages/articles, ranking keywords, links etc...)
Then just go for it

Oi, tudo bem?

My advice look at a successful sites in the US on the niche you want and make it better in PT.

Niching down gives a lot of relevance for content and makes it very easy to interlink so google knows you are an expert in your niche.

Google don't know DR so I have no idea why are you using it.

Google are counting backlinks, so use RD instead.

If you can build better links than the top results, then go a head and and try the niche
