DO i need proxies for Scrapebox? and how many?

It depends on the number of campaigns you run and delay settings, to get started 10 or 20 proxies will be a good enough, number if you're going to do lot of Google scraping you'll need more proxies at least 50, You can check here for good private proxies with a decent connection speed and affordable price.

It really depends on how you intend to use the software. Scrapebox is so versatile that any given users usage scenario is often completely different from others despite that the basic overall functionality remains the same. For example, I don't use scrapebox for intensive keywords scraping, but for other purposes, and I find that the proxies I can scrape internally with the software meet my needs.
That said, as others have eluded to - if you will be scraping a lot of urls, or keywords you are going to need some private proxies. If you are running one simple campaign each month with limited research components, then 5 privates is probably plenty, and if you won't be scraping with it - then you probably don't really need any private proxies. You can still do considerable posting with the public proxies you can scrape with scrapebox - they're just not that good for using with Google.

I've been using 10 private proxies for years with no problems (5 should work for you)...haven't cranked it up to full potential though!

It depends on how many threads you want to run and how much you want to scrape at one go.
Problem being that on long scrapes, the Scrapebox proxes die and cannot be easily refreshed. However, if you use an external scraper, then you can set Scrapebox to reload a file every X minutes and keep your proxies somewhat fresh and operable. See below image for evidence of claim:
Thirty hours, 200000 keyterms. Still scraping. Expect to scrape for another two days. Of course, you could use another instance of SB with the Automator plugin and do the same, but then you are using proxies that are scraped and used to death. You would also not not have the option of using transparent proxies for scraping when using the SB scraper. The inability to use transparent proxies limits the available proxies for scraping because Google passed proxies are almost as rare as hens teeth.

I'm looking into using the expired domain names checker plugin for Scrapebox. I have a list of about 3000 URLs I'd like to run.
How should I handle the proxy? Should I buy 5 or 10 proxies from the sites Scrapebox recommends or do I need to do this since I'm just scraping URLs and checking for expired domains?
