Do Guns Make Us Safer?

I love everyone on here but I lesson to live scanner
Android app, the rough life with gun culture
Americans go thu not funny very scary.
That only on scanner without living there.
Maybe your American and use to heigh tension of crime but I don't like it .

I live in a European country with strict gun laws, and as an ex-soldier who was trained with all kinds of weapons, I don't want civilians to be able to buy semi-automatic rifles and all kinds of shit. I think it makes a society less safe for several reasons.

1. People are stupid and shoot themselves and/or others (or get shot by their toddlers) because they don't handle their weapons properly.

2. Having a gun makes it easy for people in a personal crisis to do stupid things because it takes a lot less psychological effort to shoot at someone from a distance than to stab him in the chest with a knife or so.

3. Carrying a gun will give people a false sense of confidence and make escalations of trivial conflicts more probable and severe.

It's a cultural thing. In the past, the European countries were monarchies where a strong government had all the authority, so nowadays, when people trespass you call the police. In the U.S., the settlers always had to defend themselves from dangers because the central government was weak or far away (in the beginning), and later on there were just so many weapons in circulation that nobody wanted to be one of the few without one. I totally get that, and it's probably hard to change, but I still prefer a society with as few armed civilians as possible.

Should the government where I live weaken further, and should violent crime levels rise further too, creating a situation in which I don't feel sufficiently protected by the police anymore, I would also arm myself if I couldn't leave the country for some reason. I'd rather leave entirely, though.

Depends on the country. In the USA there are more guns than people and they are easy to get same day, legally or illegally. In that case guns DO make you safer because all the criminals have them already. The USA is in too deep to take away guns from civilians.

In a country where guns and gun violence is relatively rare (Poland, Iceland), there is almost no point in introducing guns to citizens. Criminals rarely have them. Why give them that opportunity?

The argument of a government becoming totalitarian is silly. If your leader turns into Kim Jong Un, your semi-automatic rifle with 60 rounds in your garage isn't going to save you.
 
I'll tell you from personal experience.

As a kid I had a tough home life which made me turn to the streets and caused a temporary lack of morals and ethics.

I had friends that would do breaking and entering, burglaries and home invasions (against drug dealers) and I NEVER joined them because I believed, and still believe that if someone breaks into your house they deserve to be SHOT.

That's a line that you DO NOT CROSS and if you cross that line you should be killed. Your home is your castle, you and your family deserve to be safe in your place of rest and anyone who disagrees is a threat and doesn't deserve to breathe the same air as the rest of civilized society.

If there was no fear of being shot I'm sure you would see more violent home invasions with home owners being tied up and tortured.

Look at South Africa for example. That will happen in the USA the second the gun grab starts. There is too much racial conflict and the only thing keeping the peace is the right to bear arms.

EDIT: Someone I knew got shot and killed trying to rob his weed dealer, my other friend got shot in the leg for this same thing. I support the shooters in both circumstances.
 
Make guns illegal.
Because criminals follow the law, right?

I 2nd the other persons comment about it being insurance, hope you never need it but if you do you’re very glad you have it.

Love mine. Worth every penny.

Criminals will get guns whether they are legal or not. Do you honestly think laws are going to change their access?

You're the type of people who think a sign that says "gun free zone" is going to stop a guy from robbing a bank, aren't you?

Look, people think the gun will help them. Here is the thing:

If someone wants you dead you can count on them surprising you, being better armed etc. It's the biggest myth "good guy with a gun" saving anything vs the impact of every idiot having a gun.

Tons of factual stats to pull but this should be enough. Look at this see if you can find a European country ahead of the US

I'd rather be shot than stabbed 50 times and left bleeding out in the middle of the road like they do in Europe.

A few neighborhoods in America account for an overwhelming majority of homicides.
 
Been a long time since we had guns here in AUS.
Problem is, despite it being "banned", it's not hard to get them, you just have to look in the right bush.
Thus, making all us legit folks feel uneasy at times, if they ever had any connections to the underworld.
That being said, I feel quite safe having machetes and katanas lying scattered all over my house as displays and my furballs guarding my house. :D
I don't want to break law by illegally owning one :oops:

I LOVE the australian attitude on gun control.

Even after the ban you got people manufacturing Luty SMG's in their basement. The same can't be said for the UK, who mostly have muskets and ancient revolvers and even that is on a very small scale.

You miss the point, any idiot can have a gun in the US, go to a gun show = no background checks etc.. I live in a really good area with no issues right here, but just a few days ago road rage between 2 guys one shot the other, not far from here, just as one example.
 
It doesn't make you safer, but there isn't a huge threat from it eather so people should be allowed to own and buy guns - should they carry it to the next mcdonalds branch? - I don't know
 
As someone who already pulled the trigger on someone, I started to hate guns (the person I've shot is still alive.)

The moment I realized that pulling that trigger makes it so easy to kill a life, made me give up my own gun.
I'm pretty sure if I killed the guy I would've broken down

I guess, it really depends on the individual.

freedom is limitless and better. to rather pay the price of living under psychological and personal liberty restrictions.

when u got out for a drink or hang out or look for hookers are u worried about getting robbed or killed?

go visit the tenderloin in SF and then after that go to Oaklan - 99/bancroft and let me know what u think - these areas have restrictive gun control and ull see what i mean
