From my experience, Google doesn’t really get “confused,” but relevance still matters. If most of your backlinks are coming from unrelated niches, it can make your site look less focused. But if the majority are otherwise, Google starts to clearly associate you with that topic. A finance link to a finance site makes more sense than a random health blog linking to it.
What’s been working for me is keeping things topically consistent, then adding a few strong links from broader sites to balance it out.

I think niche relevance still matters more, especially if you want to build long-term authority. I think backlinks from many unrelated fields might not help, and could even weaken your SEO profile if overused. Google looks for backlinks from strong websites → backlinks that are valuable and relevant to the topic. Google not only cares about authority but also highly values relevance. In the long run, guest posts from sites in the same field or relevant niche are more effective and sustainable. You can consider my point of view.
