pros: you make money if the guest poster agrees to pay you. And you also get content for free
cons: you have to link out to his / her websites. This is not a big con, though, many people are OK with it but when you have 100 posts on your site and 90 of them link out to non-popular sites your site starts being seen as a link farm by some people. And you also leak out link juice (authority) through the various OBLs that you're linking out to

I agree with what tazarbm said. Plus, try to keep a healthy ratio of your own content to guest posts. As a rule of thumb, you can accept one guest post with an outbound link to a non-popular site for every 10 articles that you post on your website. If the guest posts link out to very good websites, you can accept a bit more. However, to maintain your own identity and brand value, don't go overboard with accepting too many guest posts.

I know a blogger who made it big with guest posts. But when Google punisheed these kind of blogs, he stopped taking guest posts.

I didn't know this. I was just watching some SEO videos and learned that guest posting is the best way for blacklinking strategy but now I know it could also affect my site negatively

People who allow guest post have separate blog for just that to sell guest post, lot of them are pbns or have pbn links. These blog have medium to high pumped up authority, fake traffic or 0 traffic, expired/aged old domains.
That's how you sell guest post.
Not by trashing your only white hat blog.

It can affect if you do it excessively as @tazarbm said.
It is not like that you shouldn't sell guest posts, what is important here is to keep the count to minimum and try to link out to good quality websites whenever possible.
