Forum links have their place. They give you the chance to build a varied backlink profile, both in terms of types of sites that mention yours and in anchor text.
They are no more trash or spam than any other type of link. If you link back to a useful article on your website that is relevant to the forum post, you're adding value, not spamming.

Everyone always talks about them being weak links and spam etc. but hardly anyone ever talks about relevancy. Forum links on a niche relevant forum are a great way of picking up solid backlinks for your site. You'll get relevancy, a mix of do and no follow links and if you build them naturally/cleanly a good anchor text profile.

Forum links perform particularly well, even if no-follow, I never do profile link I talk about inserting your link directly in the thread, for that you have to go white hat, hire some VA to build trust around your profile then put your link in a natural way.

If you are using them as a key part of your link building, then no. However, they are good for backlink profile diversification and I still think that getting links on relevant niche forums is going to have a positive impact, though not major.

You can do on most forums but you need to spend time interacting on there to make it seem legit.
Relevant forum links are good for the diversification of the backlink's profile. These links don't rank your website but build authority in Google's eyes. Additionally, these backlinks drive visitors to your site who are interested in the subject of your business.
Try to find relevant forums by Scrapebox. Don't post on forums that are not related to your business.
