like ik you can send 30 cold DMs everyday (spaced out nicely) to avoid your account from getting fried and DMs hitting "Hidden Requests"

however, if I DM 30 people a day, and decide to follow up with these guys the next day (so 30 cold NEW DMs + 30 follow ups to the unresponded cold DMs from yesterday = 60 DMs a day) will this fry my account? Im only going to open 30 new conversations/day but follow up with A LOT of people who wont answer from the first message

I’d focus more on total outbound activity than just new conversations. Thirty new DMs plus 30 follow ups could still look aggressive if most go unanswered. I’d increase volume gradually and keep follow ups personalized.
yeah so you think total outbound being too large is an issue? rather than purely new convos

Waiting a few days between followups could get you better response rates besides lowering spam risk. Two days back to back can be seen as annoying and low effort, but like a Tuesday and then a Friday comes off as you actually thinking about the person specifically.

Not sure what Instagram limits in terms of volume, if you have to limit total outbounds to 30/day for example that sound suck, but I'd start off messaging 15 people/day, repeating every three days with one followup, then after three days you're at 30 people/day, 15 new and 15 (or slightly less) followups.

Follow-ups still count as DMs. Even if you're only opening 30 new conversations, Instagram still counts every message you send. 60 DMs a day might be fine for some accounts, but it depends on how old and trusted the account is. If you're unsure, start with fewer follow-ups and increase them gradually if everything stays stable.

Instagram usually look at your overall messaging activity not just new conversations. Follow ups are also count as messages, so sending too many messages in a day can increase the risk of restrictions.
So, avoid sending too many messages in a single day.

It definitely counts as 30 new DMs. This is a very aggressive method and it will probably get you shadow banned, or even outright banned.

And it is not only about quantity but also patterns, response rates, history of your account, and content of messages. Many messages sent after many non-responsive users can also lead to your account being flagged as spam, so do not force anything and focus on conversationss

Follow up messages are generally lower risk than opening lots of new conversations but sending a high volume can still affect your account depending on the platform and how people interact with your messages

I would focus on response rates and engagement rather than just the number of DMs

Follow-ups count toward your total daily outbound actions regardless of whether it's a new or repeat contact, so 60 total messages is still 60 signals to the spam system, not 30. I'd keep total DMs (new + follow-up) under whatever cap you've been safely using, rather than treating them as separate buckets.

What matters is less about the number and more about account history, reputation, and the quality of your messages. Your follow-ups could still lead to limitations because they appear to be repetitive, so make sure that each one of them is unique

But I would be more cautious with the total messaging activity per day rather than the amount of new chats. Since even follow ups fall under messaging activity if u have doubbled ur activity overnight u might need to ease into that 60 count.

Since follow up is part of the outbound campaign as well, sending 60 direct .messages may increase the risks significantly, particularly in case one is using an account that is relatively new. The quality of replies is far more important than the DM quantity.

So here's how it works :

-When you send a Cold DM to someone, After the first message, They have to accept the chat.
-If they dont accept the chat, You cant send them a second message.
-To some you can and to some you cant. It depends on what the end user has done with their DM Settings.
-So if you send 30 New DMs a day, It will count as 30 Open Requests.
-And to those who you follow up with, That wont count as a DM so you can do that freely.

But before sending DMs, Make sure that :

-You check on Day 1 where the DMs are landing - The Requests Section or the Hidden DMs.
-Make sure the account is old and warmed up for atleast 3-4 Weeks.
-Take Random days like 1 day off in every 7-10 days to keep the account normal and going else you will end up in spam or get blocks.
-Test every 15 days with your own accounts to see where the DM Lands, This is important.

If you consistently send messages but receive a low response rate, the algorithm will classify your messages as spam, and your account may be restricted or temporarily suspended.

Majority of the people are saying that follow ups on old messages count as new DMs. I doubt all of them might have actually done those tests personally, and are mostly assuming things.
From my experience I'd say follow ups shouldn't be considered as equal to a pure new IG outreach by IG Algo. And if I were at your place, I'd just run a test for it for a couple of days, and confirm it 100% for myself. So I'd personally would recommend that instead.

From what I have seen follow ups are usually less of an issue than constantly opening new conversations I would still keep the volume reasonable and pay attention to engagement because if people ignore or report your messages your account health can still be affected
