hello all. been stuck in the basement coding up an all in one 280+ platform spam in a can project the last year or so not really paying attention to the google machine or any recent updates etc. im wondering given the choice between a follow not relevant link versus a no follow relevant link which would be ideal for increasing average serp positions at this time. at this time i understand ideally a follow relevant link is good stuff but what about relevant no follow? would you take a follow not relevant link over a no follow relevant link at all?

as far as I understand, you need both. You need a healthy mix of types of links, as if your backlink profile is "organic".

righto, cuz those epic 1000 word posts have millions of organic follow and nofollow links appearing 10ms after you publish!! =)
im talking google gaming here.. brute force make your links and get google to acknowledge em and increase your position up to the top..assuming you could say perhaps use a dns server and scrape every domain on the internet looking for locations to link drop would you take a follow not relevant link from say pr2 spaminacan dot com link to a lawyer blog over a link from no follow lawyer listing site to the same lawyer site..

Relevance is huge when in comes to link quality. Yes Do-follow "passes link juice" but no-follows can also help your rankings. SearchMetrics did a study a while back on prominent linking factors and no-follow links had a pretty significant positive correlation to high rankings. Having said that, I've seen results in the serps that had an overly do-follow bias to their link profile. Personally, I'd go for both if it's a possibility. If you have to choose just one, I'd say go for relevance, you can build non-relevant do-follows all day long anyways.

Always go with the relevant link -- PR doesn't mean much anymore..

No follow vs do follow is really irrelevant. You need both, but any good link profile and link building software will create both varieties. I'd take a relevant no follow link over an irrelevant do follow link any day. All of my sites rank incredibly well and never once I have ever paid attention to no follow/do follow. They are both necessary for a healthy link profile.
