If you're in a niche where the top 10 domains all have tons of facebook likes, then yes, it'll be a good idea to do the same. Last thing you need is to stand out like a sore thumb when you hit the first page.

But if your niche has no one getting tons of facebook likes, then it's not necessary. In this case, I would focus more on on-page factors and links. Replicate, Match and Exceed.
