Do expired domains really worth that much?

I've been watching GoDaddy auctions for quite some time now.

I've seen decent domains go for 2 to 12k.

I guess they have some value for SEO; otherwise people wouldn't buy them.

The weirdest example is the one I have attached.

This domain was sold for 10k. The previous domain was a magazine about food, celebrities, and photography; the guy turned it into a crypto news site.

Completely unrelated.

All the links with juice show a 404 page.

Other people who have bought the domains I watch have made better use, and some have not...

I am working on a case study with expired domains and have purchased some expired domains, but from time to time, I doubt if these domains are worth the price I am paying, $x,xxx. 100% related to my main domain (more on that on my upcoming journey thread)

What is your experience and opinion guys?

For this domain, it is true. It resembles a major crypto news website.

I am talking mostly from an SEO perspective. A decent domain with 200rd goes for 1-2k,1k ref domains, 4k+.

I've noticed that most of those RD are low quality, and only 20-30% of the links are from high DR domains.....
 
I bought many expired domains throughout the years. Most for pbns, those were worth the price, because they were not expensive, so I could do a good ROI easily. I also bought many premium auction domains and turned them into money sites. For example, once I bought the former official tourism website of Greece. Then I recreated the same website as before. Even though the content was the same, and the links were very good, it didn't gain back its former traffic levels. Eventually, I sold off this domain at a loss.

I am a bit addicted to expired domains, because I can find them easily, but I promised myself not to buy another one, because it's too risky.

I am testing something similar but my primary use will be to 301 after some time and not use it as a money site.

Below is the first expired domain I purchased (like you I got addicted and bought more since then over the last couple of weeks)

It used to rank quite well. For some reason the owner abandoned it, and it simply expired. No penalty or use for pbn, I checked.

I restored it at the beginning of December and have been improving the site gradually since.

Although slowly...it is going upwards
 
As long as the domain has enough link juice from authroity sites it worth it
 
Just like with everything, domains are worth what people are willing to pay. And they are willing to pay a lot. In the past 3 years, the prices have tripled and are growing every day. Some of my money sites that I have bought back in 2019 - 2020 would go for 5x at the very least these days. But that's how market works.

The supply of decent and clean domains is extremely low and the demand is bigger and bigger.

Regarding the opening post, crypto is a spammy niche and can entertain whatever domain you have at hand. That goes for most spammy niches, especially when it comes to foreign markets.
Asian casino/betting people are willing to pay whatever to get their hands on domains. And they do not care about niches at all. They go for pure power. Same case with the domain you posted.

Regarding the methods, whether you want to use these for money sites or redirects, they will work (unless you fuck up). These methods have been working since forever, they are time-tested and won't go anywhere anytime soon.

He would lose the entire link juice and may even get penalized. The entire purpose of buying the expired domain has been failed. Too bad, 10k wasted.

But expired domains, especially in difficult niches help a lot in making the job easier and sometimes faster. The benefits of aged links.

With regards to price, anybody could price anything however they want, in fact, I do say even on this forum, the value of a product or service is not determined by the price.

If you think you can afford $x and you think it's enough for any product, you should go ahead with it but it's best to be armed with comparative prices from other sources.
 
It depends how you evaluate that domain.
Different people have different requirements and so they evaluate domains differently.
There are people who are ready to pay that type of price for a domain, so the prices are high.
 
I've personally surfed the wikipedia and found an domain with 40 RD and a DA of 19. It's pay off, better than a fresh domain. Website has been accepted for adsense aswell.
31 articles (24 at the moment of adsense accept). AI Generated content. Will scale it and place a cloacker xD
 
You need to be smart about how you exploit such a domain.
  • Some people 301 it and leave it at that. I've seen it work some of the time.
  • Others use it for their main sites, and some of the evidence in the posts above shows that it's a valid tactic.
  • Personally, I'm more of a funnel/advertise type of guy. I've used a lot of my expired domains as landing pages for people (and spiders) to be persuaded to investigate a lot of my other sites.
 
If an expired domain was left dormant for 1-2 years it's really hard to get it ranking again. Especially if in the meantime it was displaying error pages, 301 redirected it, or someone turned it into a pbn site in the meanwhile for a short period of time and then let it drop.
In most cases these domains won't rank like they did similarly even if you restore the content that once did well.

The domain I showed above is exactly like that.

It is starting to rank but at a slow rate.

Returning to OP question about the Godaddy and price.

I am also followiing and buying Expired lately and from all the markets, this is where the big fish are shoping.

I think that there is alot bot auctioning by some parameters: .com, TF, traffic, backlinks from Wiki, as I saw many autions skyrocket the price for some strange domain name. Yes, many of them are good, but like in case you mentioned, I dont think is manualy checked as it will not pass inspection.
 
Depend on person to person, Personally I would never throw so much money on a domain, unless I am planing on going really big with brand thing.

As far as SEO goes, you dont need domains with huge link profile if you know what you are doing.
 
If the domain has rich backlink profile, then it is worth buying.
Also, the age of the domain falls as one of the ranking factors!

How do these guys put a value on these domains? And what are these guys doing with these domains to justify several thousands of dollars per domain? I just saw an expired DA39 (with a ton of great links (500+) and was just ranking for a ton of keywords, go for $3,000. I mean how can you justify that vs say a DA25 with 100RD for a few hundred dollars (if you can find)? Hypothetically speaking would ten of those for the price of one really good domain have more value?

I would advise to not use DA as an evaluator of domains. We are not in 2014 anymore.

You have a project, you have a certain budget and you have to be profitable. Means justify an end. Also, SEO has not been a game for small fish for quite some time now.
 
This expired domain business is starting to look like tulipmania.....a mediocre PBN website that I dropcatched in 2018 and paid 5$ for it and forgot to renew just got sold for 1400$. Who the fuck pays that kind of money for a domain with 47 backlinks?

When searching through thousands of domains i usually start with da over 15 then look at them individually. Da isn't the best but atleast helps filter down. Of course if there is only a handful of referring domains I ignore it as well. Do you have a better suggestion for filtering down from the thousands to a much smaller number?
