Just wondering if this strategy is still effective at all?

There are differing opinions here, I personally think if the directory is highly relevant to what you want to promote, then yes it is worth it, maybe not so much for ranking in the search engines but as a vehicle to drive you targeted traffic. I still believe some of the more highly acclaimed directories are effective such as the Yahoo directory (not free) or dmoz (good luck with that though)

Yes, absolutely. They work as back links to your website when you are struggling to get back links. If you already have back links, dont waste your time.
Dont bother paid directories, try to submit to free directories. There are a ton of free directories available, if you search in google you will find them.

Maybe only digg. I had one guy submit my site to numerous directories and I didn't really see any impact on traffic. Maybe its because the title and description werent spinned.

If you were on one of the live Google Team chat, that happened recently, they clarified this point. Directory submission is useless, unless you submit to 2-3 known directories such as
Dmoz, business, BOTW and Yahoo.

But even then I think only DMOZ is worth it, and getting through their dictator moderators will take centuries..

The big ones i.e DMOZ, Yahoo, they matter a lot
With the others, there seems to be some advantage but nowhere as large as the afore mentioned

Having said that, it's about getting as many backlinks as possible and a number of directories do follow
I conceed that pages wit a list of many links don't carry a lot of weight but a directory link is better than no link at all

I agree, they do matter because those sites have high PR links. But with most new sites getting added on those websites as well then you should still continue adding backlinks.

If I were doing it manually, I'd say no. But so many folks will do 100's of them for you for really cheap, so I'd have to say yes -- even if just for link count.

Outsource manual submissions to relevant and high ranking directories. This has cost me about $50 on average to get 500 manual submissions. Make sure you vary your title, description, and anchor text links(if any) and also make sure to get the list of submissions once the project is done.

I've had niche wh sites go from pr1 to pr4 almost overnight with quality manual submission.

This is interesting, I would like to do the same. Can you PM me who you used.

I think that it's not effective as it used to be, so I wouldn't pour all the resources onto that.

Relevant ones are definitely better, free ones are better (because they are free) than ordinary paid ones but not as good as the very popular ones (paid or free).

Make also sure that they are not going to go out of business soon for whatever reason (choose established ones) and that they are do follow and seo friendly in general.

Submitting just for traffic doesn't give enough benefits, you want traffic, PR (if you need it) and SEO links.

Find preselected and updated lists, DIY is better and change descriptions, titles and categories if you can. Categories should be as accurate and precise as possible.
Avoid featured link options, unless it's something extraordinary, and reciprocate links only if you have to and the directory is relevant.

I still do directory submissions for my sites, though it isn't as big of focus for me now.

What I tend to do is submit my site to a small number of them that approve quickly to get some links into a new site so that the spiders can find it - and for me that has been a very effective strategy.

As each year passes it seems that directory submission becomes less relevant for SERP. However, even if this actually is the case I still continue building backlinks from directories mainly to increase the resale value of my sites.

i personally think that directory submissions are a complete waste of time,
i even have downloaded Directory Submitter of Brad Callen and still i'm completely
annoyed by the process of submitting and waiting for confirmation.

Very Interesting... what niches were they and what service did you use??

I think it is a waste of time, but for some odd reason I still do it. I really need to find something else to do with my time.

By "do that much" are you referring to help with ranking or direct traffic from the directories?

I was referring to rankings, but I have since decided that they are more effort than what they are worth, and its better to focus on higher leverage methods...
