Do comments on blogs matter?

Does it help rankings when a blog has a lot of comments? I was thinking to start approving some of the spam comments, which just compliment the blog without spamming any product and simply remove the poster's email and www, so that way I could have hundreds of fresh comments...but does it really make a difference?

I don't think so...more important is social shares on those blog posts...

I feel it will help for users already on the site making them think its more popular and then being more likely to share it etc but not much else

Your idea with removing www and email is good and accepting them would help make the blog look active/popular but if they are crappy and unrelated to the article I would not accept them.

I strip the website out, leave the email in and change the comment to something which suits the article it was wrote on. Not sure if it helps, or even if Google can see it has been written by another IP.

Sure they do matter, as long as they are relevant to your topic/niche.

Comments show an interaction. In terms of rankings social shares are more important.

The issue with blog comments is that you never have the control (except it's your site) of the OBL which is a very important factor.

If the blog is for conversions sand not just for a backlink then yeah comments help since it shows visitors that
the blog is being visited and it is active. Not one person likes sitting in an empty and creepy restaurant so it only makes
sense that the same applies to blogs.

A steady flow of comments would make your blog post more fresh and allow Google to send its spider to it and re-update its query more often. It may affect your ranking by it showing more activity on your post. It can also be a great source of keyword density if you manually create blog comments yourself. It can also spark engagement if your visitors see other users being active on your post.

The major thing about comments is they give you more UGC (user generated content). It will help make the page seem more unique (especially if you are using spun content). Definitely get rid of the spammy type comments that provide no value. However, when they provide value - that's a good thing. It may make more people want to comment on your articles, and interaction is a good thing.

if the comment itself is not spammy, but the link is not related to the site, what would you do:
a. would you approve it
b. allow the link go through, but remove the spammy anchor text and give it a generic name
c. remove the link and then approve it

I am leaning more towards option B. thoughts? it would entice more people to leave non-spammy comments with actual names and not anchor words as names.

Spam comments are spam comments, there are tons of them on the web - so I doubt they will make any difference if not harm.

Relevant, not spammy, low OBL and do follow . Then yes. Otherwise is more harm than help

Depends on the niche. In some cases , it can be very useful like politics related websites where you will get comments bigger than your article.
