Hello, do backlinks matter in 2015?

Someone told me Google doesn't care about backlinks to stop people from buying/selling them to manipulate search engine ranking.. is this true?

Nope mate, it's all about backlinks. You can read here a lot of threads and case studies that proves this.
 
Nah. Google doesn't care about backlinks. All they care about is facebook likes and twitter retweets.

Don't let illusions misguide you, OP. Content is the king but so are links, most important of them all being on-site linkbuilding.
 
Backlinks are useful in lots of ways. And search engine won't work well without web graph.
And that's why Penguin exists.
 
Of course they do, how would Google pick between sites to rank?

yes and no.

YES: 100% you can rank anything with decent links / pbn.
NO: I have seen a site rank in one of the toughest niches in the world without any links and actually all links being disavowed, all that was needed was media buys which deliver around 10m targeted visits pcm who for the majority actually do not bounce and engage.
 
Yeah. Of course they do. Nobody can't deny its importance even in 2015.

it matters but you shouldn't be looking for ways to get them manually. just write good content and you'll rank on your own bro.

link building is frowned upon by google man. you'll get penalized. don't do anything black hat and just stick to white hat seo. make your site write good content and never ever buy links. if you do google will crush your site because they're like the nsa.

instead of focusing on backlinks just buy more adwords bro. google loves that most of all.
 
Google cares both content and back links and also social networks. Nowadays, these 3 plays a major role in SEO. Its my opinion.
 
Yes they do matter, and in fact ranking without good backlinks is nearly impossible.
 
it depends on keyword/niche

if the niche is easiest one and has no competition at all, then you can write Unique content and rank it without lots of backlinks
but if the niche is competitive, yes - backlinks matter

some say the content is KING, they are right but never forget that backlink is the KING too
 
OP, backlinks matter as much as a good content. It is only recommended to make them the White Hat way for best results. This is what matters.
