Article directories are not of any real value to ranking. They lost their value since the first panda update and even at that, all your links lands on PR0 sites, for it to be powerful you need to inter link it or build links to it.

That's not true we are a local business like that and are outranking schools and other companies without likes, g+, or twitter.

Yes its still good but you have to submit the articles in just High PR and well reputed directories like Ezine, Goarticles etc

Yes, they still do. I use a lot of mix n match with them, along with other link diversification. But, I make sure that all of them get a unique article nowadays. But, I suggest you don't only concentrate on them alone.

Honestly, Article directories really work. Articles marketing will bring traffic and will help you in keyword ranking too. This is one of the best link building methods. Make sure you use your keyword in the anchor text and most of the directories are do follow.
