Do App Download Bots Work?

Would an App Download Bot give your app a huge boost or has Apple pretty much figured it out and made it obsolete? If they still work, how much of an effect would it have on revenue? I believed Apple changed its algorithm for ranking to include more than just app downloads so I don't know how effective it would be.
