DMOZ directory

Hi, I've tried to register at DMOZ several times, but I never get registered. I've tried to register several time over the last year and several of my competitions are listed with DMOZ. is there any trick to this? Why can't I get in?

I think there is no trick to get listed. You must be fulfilling there requirements to get it done.

It's likely that:
1. They are or know a Dmoz Editor; or
2. They paid a Dmoz Editor; or
3. They got lucky with their Dmoz submission!

1/2. Dmoz Editor:
Volunteer to become an editor for several Dmoz directories. You will be able to submit reviews of your own sites and have the opportunity to get to know your market better. That leads to more linking opportunities.

3. Dmoz submission:
a. Choose the correct category. Looking at potential categories before submitting your site. Find sites related to yours that are already listed in Dmoz, by using the search function.
b. Read Dmoz guidelines. Use a proper title and description. Use the name of your site; do not use anchor text. Do not use all capital case or promotional language (best, great, etc.).
c. Keep on topic. Think from the Dmoz Editor's perspective. If you're submitting your website as a golf magazine, but a big chunk of your articles are about weight loss, then the Editor is going to have a tough time categorizing it.

It is hit and miss on speed of acceptance. I have listed some clients that get in within 2 weeks and some over 90 days and even close to a year.

In my experience the ones that have a quick listing have been "general" listing. Keep it basic relative and simple when choosing the category you want. If you have a site that could qualify for multiple categories in the "real world" with dmoz you need to choose the most single top level accurate category.

I used to be an editor of a dating section on DMOZ and we got 100's and 100's of applications every week and I gave up with it in the end. On reflection I wish I hadn't as it might be useful now.

Is there an editor for the section your are submitting to? If so contact them directly and be polite, grovel a bit and they may take a closer look at your site. If there isn't an editor, apply for the position!

One other thing, if your site requires a login or sign up to access the majority of the site, set up a dummy login for the editor so he/she can review your site fully. I used to get dating sites to review with access to one page only without signing up. That used to be an instant refusal as I made it clear on the application process that we needed a dummy account setup to review these types of sites fully.

want to get there faster? get official business address linked in the website -> genuine businesses get there much, much faster

dmoz in 3 steps:
1) submit following all the guidelines (1 mistake can kill this process)
2) forget about that domain in dmoz
3) has your domain gone up to pr4 without explanation? - check your dmoz listings now

Apply for the dmoz using their guidelines and a top-level category as one of the previous posters suggested. Then wait. It can take months.

In the meantime spend (or get your client to spend) the money for a carefully-submitted submission to the Yahoo directory. Very powerful.
