[discuss] Authority sites, content or backlinks?

Maybe some of you have read that I'm building an authority site (it already has more than 200 pages of content). Before the last panda update I was ranking for a few high search keywords and I was making 35-45$ a day from adsense.However I got hit hard and lost about 80% of my traffic and earnings.

After reading some threads about mega sites, I decided to build it to 1000+ pages to see if i can make money from long tail keywords. After adding content constantly I'm seeing my visitors climb up and also the earnings. I'm also seeing links built to my articles naturally (their number is not that big but they exist)

What do you think, is it more important to build backlinks or add content ? Can you make good money from mega sites with more than 1K of pages. Do you build backlinks to the inner pages or just to home page?

Are you writing yourself or outsourcing? And are the articles quality? That's quite a few articles, I would keep churning the content, as that is safest

Right now if I was to do link building I would do it manually, and make sure to diversify the link type to the max

Oh , and definitely build backlinks to all pages, if possible, to keep it looking natural

Being authority is to make a presence first with extreme high quality even with a low number of articles. Making a presence means being the head of the niche just like how Amazon is the head of shopping sites. Getting your domain to be the first thing hits head when the niche is mentioned and being the reference for that niche. After authority comes the quantity where you don't compromise the quality by diving into the small niches under the main niche and gathering every little piece of detail about it.

Authority sites should be a long term investment where you don't expect to get ranked and make money from the first month. A website which is expected to last for +15 years takes time to be big unless you have the capital for a massive advertising/social marketing campaign of a few hundred thousand dollars to make a shortcut.
 
Nicely said. Well I think I have quality content.After all I'm writing the articles myself and it took me about 1.5 years to get to 200 articles. However, it's getting pretty tough to write after all this time.
 
An authority site is not an authority site because of the # of pages it has.

I have sites that are authority in nature that have as little as 20 pages of content.

It's about quality, not quantity.
 
Yes I think I write quality content, because I have real good knowledge in the niche I'm writing about. At the same time that's why I can't outsource the articles, I don't want any irrelevant/false info on my site. Anyway the question was will more content drive more traffic?
 
The only way to find out is to to test.

More content could or could not drive more traffic, but again, you would have to test it out.

It also depends on how well-established as an authority you are in your chosen niche, how well your content converts, etc.

If you already are not getting much traffic, then you need to re-evaluate your site and figure out why.
 
I am building authority sites by myself, but it is not as easy as that. When we have about.com and similar players in the game with us, it's pretty hard to became the number one or even number three "authority" in practically any niche where you realistically can write 1000 plus quality articles to different topics.

With my two sites that I try to build authority from combined (before the latest panda update) a SINGLE ARTICLE that ranked very well for few keywords was making me more money than all the other pages combined...

So I would give you this advice:
1. Write as many articles as you can, to gain authority and create some sustainable base.
2. Focus on backlinking few big players.

This worked well for me until the last update.. :)

more quantity is good for long tail beacause you have more change to get the exact phrase a user is searching
 
Real authority websites don't really need to create backlinks to their website, their internal link juice should be strong enough to position your long-tail keywords on the SERPs.

The problem is starting one, sure once you get such a site rolling there would no need to. However, you have to get it to that point first.
