I see more and more downloads with a request for +rep

I suggest disabling it for the download section if possible, as it is distorting if not destroying the system.

It can create a false sense of trust, which can be exploited.

I agree there is a need to get a better picture of people's contributions to the site, however some of the stuff that has been shared in the download section has been genuinely useful and hard to find and deserves rep.

Just my $0.02 but I think the answer might be for people to be limited on how much/how often they can give rep, thus making them more discriminating as to when they give it and for what.

i give rep when deserved, sometimes i should more as there are some really good posts and info, but have run into situations when I wanted to, but they asked for it. It puts me in a delema as I do not think it is right to ask for it.

Its like, damn I downloaded it and will never read it, but since I downloaded it I need to give some rep.

Maybe the solution is infraction for asking for rep/thanks

But that puts more on the mods that do a lot already.

Maybe I am just nuts and my personal pet pev.

No, you're right. I thought there was some rule against soliciting rep/thanks anyway, no?

But yeah, it would put more strain on the mods. I always just saw the "please gimme rep!" sort in the same was as needy girls who constantly want complements, but now you bring it up, it could mislead others into thinking people have made more significant contributions to the form than infact they have.

Maybe a simple pop up saying

"you SURE this is worth +rep" - YES / NO"

might solve the problem?

I agree with you guys

Feel free to thank me or +rep if you like my post

Who cares? What does Rep actually get you? Nothing. It's nothing but a virtual dick waving contest really...

-Rep me if you like. :)

I keep it simple...if somebody asks for rep, they don't get it from me.

I was chatting with someone and they mentioned my rep.

I have helped some people nothing real big for the rep I have.

I thought about the conversation and what about those rep whores that are getting rep for just posting downloads. If they filled a request that is one thing, but asking for it is another.

I see it as an exploit to gain trust and then scam.

I really dont care about rep, i help when I can just to help. But I do look at rep of people I have not seen posts of.

Yea really, Rep isn't really anything that great. I'll be honest, when I first joined this site I kind of cared as I wanted to be trusted and be a good member here, but really all it does is make you think you have a big e-penis lol.

No I don't really care about my rep, but it's kind of a good feature because some people do share good things, and they deserve it.

I am more likely to trust someone with a high rep...but its not an automatic trust. I will sort through their posts/threads to find who they are and how they represent themselves on here and proceed with caution.

I think the +rep in the DL section is a bit out of hand as well. I mean, I enjoy seeing my rep count go up and all. But if you are that worried about your rep instead of actually networking and gaining word of mouth cred while building a business, then I think you have the wrong idea of what sites like BHW are really all about.

I strongly believe that asking for +rep and asking for people to click the "Thanks" button is tacky. What these individuals don't realize is that, in essence, they are not really sharing - Instead, they are TRADING ("Here's my cool download. Now thank me and give me +rep.").

That is not in the spirit of BHW. If you want to share, share FREELY.

I wrote a post earlier this year about how dumb it is to solicit or "guilt-trip" people into clicking the "Thanks" button. You can check it out below:

I have never been concerned with with getting thank you's or +reps and I have said it many times on the forum. Sure . . . I appreciate each and every thank you and +rep I have received, but if both the Thanks and the Add Rep buttons were removed today, that wouldn't deter me from sharing one single iota. I feel that I have already been paid many times over by the valuable knowledge I have gained from BHW and the great friends I have made here.

Cheers! - "Wiz"

well everyone has an e-penis

my suggestion concerns weather they are filled with mush, or solid rock

Wiz, I thought there was a thread talking about not doing it. Thanks was always one thing, I just thought +rep was another level of tack

and if you choose on your own to give rep for a download that is up to you.
