i have used directory submission services several times. they were total waste of money.

i tried to do it manually myself and its a lot of work. most free ones want reciprocal links.
the services i have used? they just give you a bunch of directory sites, some of them are not even alive! most of them will not work because i dont have a reciprocal link. for the rest, i will not know because it takes time to get listed even if they will. it seems that most people just pay for the services and cover their eyes..?

so how do you do it? pay hundreds of dollar for each paid directory, and do it yourself?

btw, i think directory submission still works because i do see well known sites listed in directories.

i am talking about web directory. $100 might be a little exaggeration, but paid ones are like what $50?

i was thinking backlinks. you talk like there is something that can get you immediate traffic? i would like to know that..
 
Only the authority ones kept some weight as backlinks point of view. The other directories that are built on scripts such as php link directory are useless now a days.

I always use to submit my tier 1 links via GSA website submitter. I've bought the license few years ago. So, I don't want to keep the dust on my few hundred bucks that I've spent on it.
 
I don't like using directory submission at all, especially the reciprocal links. Too time consuming.
 
The way you have the reciprical link is to put it on a "partners" page, and use a nofollow/noindex tag in the page code. Make this page an orphan. Dont block with robots or htacess.

Anyway, as everyone is saying there are only a few good free directories, so manually doing them is best. Unless you are a local business, paid directories tend to be a waste of money, unless it is a niche specific site that has good traffic.

If you are even remotely white hat today the only links you should be getting are related and quality.
 
there are some quality directories around and pretty much worth 20 to 50 bucks a piece imho. You just need to find them and check their backlinks and authority.
 
I Use rankerx to build backlinks on web 2.0, profiles & directories and then use a link indexer software to index them faster

Local Directories are still a viable ranking factor for Local. Were you asking regarding local or organic?
 
directory will help you increase of citation. it will also help you for your GMB listing too.
 
Yes, directories do not have a strong effect now, but they are still useful for diluting the backlink profile and still help in ranking. Try to select strong and still reputable directories
