Directory Submission - worthwhile or useless?

Is it worth submitting to directories these days? I ask as I have never really bothered but in these times of Penguin and needing to dilute link profiles I am considering it.

On the other hand though, google send out inorganic links notification that tend to make people remove directory links. Though I suspect that google does not specifically say that directories are considered inorganic.

Any ideas please?

I'd do a few - (under 100 for a decent sized site) Like Guest books, Google is well aware that directories are only there to provide outbound links for other sites.
AVOID THE PAID ONES

But a few mixed in over time would be natural and normal.

Yes it's still worth it. Google wants a diverse backlink profile, so why not give them what they want. Directory submissions can't hurt your rankings if your adding a few here and there.

Like the above said, stay away from the paid directory sites.
 
Great question!

Submitting links to directories can be beneficial for SEO. They offer one-way links as opposed to link exchange tactics which search engines frown on, in most cases you can choose the anchor text that you use for the link allowing you to choose targeted keywords or keyword phrases, most of them are free (paying the fee at high profile directories may not give you the return you are looking for especially when there are many other SEO tactics you can use) and directories also offer targeted traffic because search engines comb directories for relevant content.

A good rule of thumb is to submit to directories that were not made for link building or SEO. In other words, find relevant directories that actually want to help people find relevant content. Google recently de-indexed or penalized sites that were set up for the sole purpose of link building.

Wow, that's some terrible advice unless people are promoting shit websites. All my top ranking sites in competitive niches have listings in BOTW, JoeAnt and other paid directories. I guess I'm part of a dying breed that likes to mix in some authoritative backlinks with the shittier ones. To each their own...

It's still working if it's quality submission...!Directory submission do make a big difference.

Yes Directories that are related to your business is still worth. Better go for citations and submit your site.If its good then you get real reviews.Recently i went with citations for my client site and in a week he saw his citation link in a first page which boosting his website.Awesome know :):cool:
 
Directories are still good for SEO. Not only for diversification but it also help you to get referral traffic

Diversify your links from various reputed directories ,, avoid building links in bulk & within short time span. when more links are developed from directories over night, Google can trace it out easily, ,
