For having better rankings?

What are other free ways to promote? Except facebook/twitter and social bookmarking.

Directory submission is good if you are doing is in well manner. Like you are choosing directories which are really human moderated and people (their staff) look at certain things before approving your site there..

As far as other free link building resources are concerned..there are countless ways to do it..Here are some of them mentioned at my this thread :

You won't achieve anythings solely relying on directory submission. However, it is the perfect starting point of any website, to get indexed/crawled properly. It is also, as stated above, helping for the link diversity.
 
Directory submission still works, BUT you need to focus on high quality niche directories that add value to users (if there are any in your niche). From my experience, being listed in these directories (next to your competitors) helps you rank better.
 
As long as you use different anchors and different content when you post and it will be natural, directories will work.
Same thing does apply for commenting and any other link building method, because it's a natural way.
 
Google doesn't care if 100 sites have the same article. Look at the newspaper industry as an example. AP sends out articles and the major newspapers print them. Article submission is useful but use fresh and unique content.
 
One thing I like to do is find some of the highest authority competitors for keywords I might be going after, fire up Opensiteexplorer, and do a bit of backlink research. Find some of their followed or 301 backlinks from high authority sites that are relevant, and go try to get those for yourself. If it's a blog or an actual high authority directory, or some other relevant site, grab that link to so that any advantage your competitor has, you are also taking for yourself.

Even when doing directory submissions for my sites, it doesn't ever send traffic my way. Seems to be a waste of time to me. I notice a lot of people are always telling others to submit to DMOZ. DMOZ? Really? There are two people that use that site, that would be the webmaster and his mother.
 
Paid directories are useful and they do help, but you have to make sure they are following some basic rules. you don't want to submit whitehat sites to spammy directory lists. It is worth it to shed out $20-$40 on a good link.
 
Find directories in your niche and submit to them. Will help with rankings and you might even get some traffic from them directly.
 
It should be a part of your diversity, but it won't do anything by itself.

Directory Submission is very good starting point for a new websites... Also Paid directories are very useful.. I'm always using directories when doing my SEO campaign.

Note:
Do not use spammy directories
Try to post on niche related directories
 
Only Directory submission won't skyrocket your ranking. It's the numerous factors that affect.
 
I also feel that directory is still works, but need to do in the proper manner, I suggest if you buy links from reputed directories, it is also worth good.
