Can purchasing/submitting to directories hurt your search engine ranking? If so, what sort of features do you look for in a directory (i.e. age, page rank, number of links already posted) etc.

They are like slow poison in Google. As i got manual penalty by Google Team under unnatural link warning !

I did not get any warning but my page rank went down.

Not an expert, but it obviously depends on the Link Directories where you're submiting your websites. I'd like to give you a better advice, but all I could recommend is to do it on aged and high PR directories. Good luck!
