Digital scale advice

To save some trips to the post office I decided to get a 5LB scale to start out as I'll mainly be shipping very light items. I took a look at the USPS price sheet to get an idea and thinking about it, this doesn't seem as useful anymore as if something does in fact weigh close to 5lbs, probably better off putting it in a priority box. However, I do have some smaller items that only weigh a few oz.

My issue comes down to accuracy as I notice that if it's off by an oz, there's sometimes a price difference. Are the scales at the actual post office a lot more accurate or could they be off by a bit like these cheap scales? I'm not using an official USPS scale, just one of those WeightMax ones that I got for less than $20 which I thought was worth a shot. My concern is that my scale will say 10oz and in fact, it's maybe really 11 or 12 oz.. Anyone have any experience with this dilemma?

As in the past apparently the post office messed up and undercharged me as I've had at least one incident where the person told me they had to pay a few cents to get their postage to the mailman which I found strange as they weighed it, not me... Fortunately it wasn't for a commercial transaction which would of looked bad on my part.

When I first started selling online, I used weightmax scales. If it's only off by an ounce after the first few ounces, the chances of you getting called out on it are slim. If you're printing the shipping label yourself, you should be fine. They mail millions of packages a day. When I mailed, I put what my scale said.

Same here I got 70lb scale. I kept getting some messed up shippments because the weight would be off which if its first class (13oz) and pushes it over. USPS would require the receiver to pay the difference. Its happen before. I would invest into a high grade scale. I got mine from amazon for pretty cheap.

When I started, I used a cheap ebay scale, it was always off but I never had a problem.

The only time I ran into problems is when i would print the label, then drop it off with the USPS clerk. She/he would weigh, then scan.. and if it was off they would say "not enough postage" then I would have to add like 15 cents or something to it

I'll definitely look into a higher capacity scales in the near future however, my concern with those bigger ones is calibration as it would be pretty expensive to get a 70lb weight...whereas with a 20lb or less scale, you can just use some fitness weights to do it. Thanks for the advice though, I'll just add an extra oz to cover myself.
