Hey Guys, i've seen Digital Ocean featured a lot on here and it seems to have great feedback so I signed up last night. But to be honest, this is the worst service i've ever had, can somebody help me understand how they are so good? So far the response from their support was 'git gud'.

Basically, I signed up to hosting and they sent me login details to a linux console, so now I have a blank server and have to do everything myself.. which primarily is just stupid as this will put off so many buyers that just want hosting and don't have any server experience, fortunately I do and even i'm struggling to set it up.

Eventually I found their 'one click' hosting option for WordPress and it's anything but one click.

They have a pretty decent guide on how to setup WordPress but it's impossible to follow, basically, i'm trying to login and it seems to give you approx. a 10 second window to do so. In that time, I need to enter a random, scrambled 25 character password which is next to impossible to do in that time limit and it boots me off because I was too slow.

I can't even login to the damn thing, apparently the next step is setting up a database which I don't even wanna think about. To be honest, I have no idea how or why people use these guys. Am I missing something here?

Just a heads up for anybody wanting to sign up to these guys, don't bother, you'll get a link and no help atall. What a waste of time.
 
To be honest, Digital Ocean works really well for us. Almost no downtime in last few years. Great customer support etc.

Obvious you'd need little bit sys admin skills to set it up for you. But worth what you pay.
 
I've never tried wordpress but it worked fine every time.
 
Do you even understand what they are offering?

They sell non-managed server so that's what you get. If you are not familiar with server setup you shouldn't use their service, get shared hosting or managed server instead.

DO is so good. Got a coupon for $25 from some site. 2 months free vps hosting. Also in the console you get more than enough time to enter username and password. Once you login, your wordpress is enabled. It is setup but you have to login and change your root login password to enable wordpress. Then just open website URL and you can do basic configuration like site title etc.

The best part is creating multiple servers and managing them easily from one location. But yeah they should provide an option of plesk or cpanel for those who cannot understand unix console etc.
 
Well learn to install wordpress[ the entire process] on a fresh linux install . It is going to save you atleast $xx per month .

Seems that you have missunderstand the service offered by Digital Ocean.
Which is: Cloud 100% self-managed pure virgin Linux installation.

From here the "low" prices.

Of course this type of VPS hosting is for people with average to good Linux knowledge .

Now you have 2 options :
a) Start reading
b) Change provider and look for semi-managed/ full managed VPS hosting.

DO is pretty good, work with them few years already and like them a lot.
The problem is not in the hosting, but in you not knowing what you bought.
DO requires knowledge and some experience, but I'd say that they have pretty good FAQ's.
Linode might be little cheaper, though!

I think you need managed hosting or someone who can help you to do the setup.
 
Just as @CyberHour said, Digital ocean comes self-managed and not so bad for the price paid. You can even buy some pretty nice dedicated servers but you do need to learn and have at least some basic skills to manage/troubleshoot ongoing issues with them. Or go with something like server pilot that will help you a bit or go with managed hosting and focus on sites and promotion instead of hosting.
 
To echo what someone else said, you clearly have no idea what you signed up for. DO sells cloud based Virtual Private Servers. They do not sell cpanel webhosting packages. They provide you with a barebones linux server and you are expected to have some server administration skills, or be willing to learn.
 
Its not them, its you. They sell unmanaged hosting, good quality unmanaged hosting, for a good price.

If you can't setup a server, go with a company who will hold your hand, and then pay for it.
 
they once said to me in single line "we just provide the infrastructure".
I was asking them questions regarding wp problems.
so i guess they are developers mostly.
 
It does sound great, for a developer, but for a guy that just wants to host a bunch of WP sites it's a massive ball-ache.
I have no idea why people would choose this to host sites over sites where you literally click a button and it's good to go.

Having to secureshell into the thing to do anything, just no. This is a warning primarily for people who thought they were a hosting provider.
Before they just give a mad list of things to do to make it work, great business model really. Here's a server, figure it out scrub.
 
The homepage of their website is very clear as to what they provide and they are pretty cheap at it.

Price.
Security.
Speed.
Spec.

I host with linode, much the same deal as DO. Because I don't have a cPanel licence or need a team of techs to manage my shit, I save money, I get a better hardware and network spec, for less. I also don't need to wait for someone else to do my updates, I do them when I want. Because I know how, it's not slow for me. My server is more secure as I don't need to patch a web panel every week and my server runs leaner and faster because of that too. Win win win for those of us that can.

I also have lots of servers, so this all compounds as you scale your sites too.
 
you just buy it and dont read any information or guides before buying it....

I agree, it is a great business model. They have experienced phenomenal growth and become the world's second largest hosting provider since their creation 5 years ago. Their business model is so successful that half a dozen other companies are now emulating them.
 
DO is awesome when I switched to DO I was clueless how it works. With their guide and youtube videos, I was up and running in about 2 hours. There is a learning curve if you're new to this type of hosting. But it's worth the time. Their speed, uptime, and support are great. It's clear that you didn't take the time to learn it and your expectations (regarding installing WP) were a bit too high.
