Hello BHW, I want to migrate my site from shared hosting to Digital Ocean VPN. Can you please tell me if it's a good idea? I read here on the forum that the $4 plan is great for hosting.

Digital Ocean VPN?
do you mean Digital Ocean's VPS?
Digital Ocean is a good hosting provider as know as you know what you are doing in terms of technical stuff.
They provide (at least true to me) near zero technical hosting related support and everything is DIY.
$4 Droplet will get you started for sure and with good optimization it can be amazing and cheap at the same time

I would never go for DO, I would much rather use Vultr HF at $6. But in general, yes, a VPS is generally much better than a shared hosting account as long as you know how to set it up securely.

Yes my bad VPS not VPN, well I don't know anything about setting a site on a VPS.

Do isn't bad but there's other options out there, even in the marketplace

you either learn, DO has lots of docs you can read.
Or go with a managed VPS plan (which will increase the cost by quite a bit)

Cloudways can be good option if you want managed VPS with support

If you're making your first transition from shared hosting to VPS, then I'd suggest starting with a provider that offers support.

Cloudways and WP Bolt are both WordPress VPS Hosting services, available for a few dollars per month more than buying an unmanaged VPS direct from the a cloud provider.
WP Bolt offers full support for your WordPress site, whereas Cloudways will just make sure the server is running fine.

Digital Ocean is known to be used by pbns. You can literally create hundreds of site with 4 dollar droplets. But if you are hosting a few sites I would suggest to go with something like linode.

Try OVh or Hetzner they provide you the best in class services. But it is completely managed by you.

I realize I'm new here (first post actually) but I have software/systems/IT/security engineering experience in addition to customer support experience. I'd be happy to consult with you and get you up and running on DigitalOcean.

I have servers at Digital Ocean since 2020 with Cloudways and never a problem. The technical support is very good and so are their prices.

Yes Vultr HF is probably the best budget choice.

DO is not bad though, similar price and performance. DO and Vultr is pretty much the same. For most people it's just a selection of brand.

DO is costly, but it is very good. Instant provisioning, ability to choose data centres, support for load balancing from the panel etc makes it really cool. It’s cheaper than aws ec2 as well if I have not mistaken.
