Hello, what is the difference between high retention views and regular views? Which is better to use?

High retention views will give you a better chance of getting your video ranked and noticed.

Normal views is just a number.

Depends. Some people consider 60%+ retention views as high retention which is not the way I think. I think a minimum of 90% retention should be there to call it High retention. High retention views helps rank your video in YouTube and search engines although not alone. Several factors influence it including social signals, ratings (doesn't matter if pos or neg), video optimization in general etc. Hope this gives an idea.

What is the difference between a high retention view, and a normal view?

Think about it like this. You're watching TV, in a second or two you decide that what is on that channel is not worth your time. So, you change the channel to something you like better and you continue to watch. Or, in terms of YT, you change to another video, a video that you find closer to your search term and you keep watching the video either in its entirety or for a fair or longer amount of time. This is how YT determines a 'good' video as compared to a 'bad' video. Being that the on-page optimization for a video is limited (you can only have one page and are limited to keywords, tags etc) it is the largest determining factor in ranking a video. Yes, you can still build backlinks to your video, but if nobody is watching a particular video, it gets lost in the search results. Why try to show something that offers no value to the visitor? So the videos with the higher retention, or length of stay, are seen as more of a benefit to the visitor because most of the visitors stick around to see what the video is offering so therefore they rank better in YT. Call it YTO (YouTube Optimization) (I just coined that, nice!).

Fake views get shaved by Youtube every so often.

"High retention" views are the ones which leave no footprint behind and just stay there counting as a normal view.

There's only one kind of view really, but high retention ones are the ones that stick.

I never noticed a difference in high retention views & regular views in ranking my videos.

High retention views refers to 90%+ of your video being watched. This signifies user engagement and falsifies quality content to youtube.

High retention views are very significant in ranking your video, about 70% of your views should be hr rather than normal views.

since a lot of emphasis is given to watch time by YT, more the retention will help you video be higher up in search

High retention views determine if youtube will promote your videos and shove you down everyone's throats. HR views are really unfair to everyone except for gamers. There's a video about youtube's top gamer (who I do not support) it basically showed how his 15 min long gaming videos watched all the way through are way more valuable than a 2-3 min comedy video watched all the way through the same number of times.

I find it sad youtube prefers someone who sits on their ass plays a game they didn't create over someone who puts hard work into making good videos
