Difference between .in and .co.in

What is the difference between .in and .co.in ?
I've seen godaddy sells both, but google for india is google.co.in

And maybe some of you know where i could buy hosting on indian servers.

.in is a domain where .co.in is a sub domain.
You can buy any of them but I personally like .in more.
For hosting one and only solution is Hostgator India. There may be other options also like Site5, Hostdime etc. But only Hostgator provides the servers IPs which are located in India.
Site5 or hostdime also have Indian data centers but their server IPs are registered outside India.
So only Hostgator is there for you.
And if you are not on tight budget I would also recommend you to have a dedicated IP address for your websites. It will cost you only 1000 additional bucks (approx 20$) but it is worth it.

both are domains ...
co.in is analogous to .com on a country level tld .(co.in was originally meant only for banks in India)
I would prefer .in over .co.in as it is simply neater and easier to type

I have another problem. WHOIS protection for .in domains. I'm not comfortable with my private information being available on the net.

You can have whois protection easily. It's not a big issue. Every registrar have this feature for some additional bucks.
