Did Penguin Wipe Out EMDs?

Also I have quite a few non emd's that got wiped out by this update so I don't think there is a lot that has changed for emd's vs non emd's

I think its not the EMD that's the problem.
Basically SEO's love EMDs so most of the EMD's would be owned
by SEO's who might have used technique's which Google hit with the
updates.

Now the rankings down what will be now to get again rankings.

Maybe look at whether, for those EMDs that got hit, do they repeat the keywords in the title, the H1, internal linking etc etc? Maybe Google now takes the view that if your domain name contains your keywords, it already knows what your site is about so repeating them in meta tags and anchors is over optimising? Whereas a domain without the keywords does need them in the title tags. Just thinking.

I've had 3 or 4 EMD's knocked down the rankings, most of them only by 4 or 5 positions but these were all in position 1 previously.

In order to try and regain positions on these, I'm focussing efforts on manual link building on authority sites, ensuring the link profile is the very best it can be. From my experience this week, EMD's still work to a certain extent, just not as well as before.

Let's think about this -- How can there be a penalty for EMDS? No. One aspect of this penguin nonsense is that prior to this Google placed more weight on emds than other search engines. One of the changes to the algorithm is to reduce the weight this factor is given.

Some other EMPIRICAL observations: Age of domain given more weight. Kws in title and meta desc given slightly less weight. Threshold for on-page kw density "over optimization" lowered. Internal linking using keywords given less weight, possibly even penalized.

We need to start piecing this together, it's still just a set of interlocking mathematical formulas that can be reverse engineered.

I have a 3 months old EMD which showed up on page #1 after the penguin update.

I don't see how EMDs can lose their value.

For every one internet-savvy IMer on BHW, there must be 10 people who have absolutely no tech/web knowledge whatsoever. You know the type of person: if you recommend them to use Firefox instead of IE, they say "oh no that sounds far too technical".

I run a forum where a large proportion of the members are like that. They need a lot of hand-holding from the mods, because changing a sig or avatar is a major feat for them.

Anyway, I know that most of these people don't even use the browser's address bar, or bookmarks, to find the site. Even those who visit the site every day start up their browser, see the search box on the home page, and type the site name (ie, the url) into the Google box. Of course then the site they want is top of the search results, so they just click that and thus get where they want to go.

I've spoken to quite a few people from outside that forum too, and they're the same. Christ, I've got family members who think that their web browser is called "Google" (and it's not Chrome, it's IE - they just think that because when they start it they see the word "Google")

I think that although it's easy for people like BHWers to forget, there are lots of people who navigate the web using search engines in this way, even when they know the url, and you can bet that G knows it.

Devaluing EMDs would leave all these people completely stranded. So they can't do it. IMHO.

I have an EMD authority site and it never got touched...

My older EMD's from 2010 and older are doing quite well. I feel that it's due to the fact that I wasn't using automated tools as heavily back then on those EMD's

EMDs are not dead by any means! Even after Penguin, 15 of the 18 EMDs I own have held onto their positions. The 3 that lost their rankings had too little content on them less than 10 pages each.

My experience says that if you build a site on an EMD domain, you would do well to have great quality content (at least 50 unique articles), which are fed to the system in a phased manner or drip-feed as it is popularly called, over a period of 60-75 days. Simultaneously, set up 5-10 Ping.fm accounts and use a new one each day to promote one or two pages of your site along with at least 6-10 random pages from authority sites broadly related to your niche. You must take care and not use any of your main keyword to promote your site's inner pages or for that matter pages from any other site as well ;-) Best is to use the Post/Page Title.

You will get to see positive results within 15-20 days for sure!

Once your site gets on to the first page, you can slow down posting new content but 'never' stop it altogether. A new page/post in 7-10 days + Ping.fm promotion will enable you to hold on to your rankings.

Guyz am not trying to profess that am good with seo but base on my experience with emd is really effective , if you experience that your site are being wipe out or you lose some ranking there is a big factor unto that. first i would say focus on your on page seo, do not over-seo your site this is the usual problem to most blogger or webmaster, try to make some experiment. don't just depend on what other saying or posting here.. it might be effective to them. just a simple hints make sure you only have 1. 50 percent keyword density

I think that your backlinks portfolio is going to play a bigger impact than the domain name itself. I have a few EMD who ranks well, even since penguins.

When you have emd, you prob think to link massively to that one page with exact anchor and screw the deeps. Prob just the links effecting it again IMO.

EMDs still work, but I guess not that well as before.

it is surely works but but as Ive said watch your onpage seo ...

i dont think EMD will affect anything with panda, i have several site with EMD some of them are on page 1, some of them gone to no where. I believe is something to do with backlink or other thing else like content. All my EMD site using same template + same seo plugin. PM me if you interest to do case study, i can send you few domain(still ranked in #1page and gone to nowhere) to check.

Can't find any pattern to approve this conclusion among my sites.

Two of websites got severely hit for exact match keywords.. So the value for EMD's is surely decreasing
