Did I buy a penalized Domain?

I bought a domain at the start of august. It is 5 years old. It had one previous owner. I checked the link profile before I bought and it had varied anchor text. I am getting no traffic and although all the pages are indexed if I take text from the homepage and paste it into Google the site does not show in Google. If I take text from the inner pages it shows on Google. Did I buy a penalized Domain? I am not sure, If I did I want to remove the content and start again as I am wasting a lot of time on it if it is penalized and getting no where fast. Would greatly appreciate any comments. Thanks
