Development experts, WordPress or custom?

Hi guys

Need your opinion on what platform is best suited for a real estate portal such as trulia, realtor. Com and the likes

Is WordPress a solid and robust enough platform to build a potentially a big website such as the ones mentioned or what's a better solution?

For big sites, it is good to have it custom built. But that requires budget.

So it is better idea to start with wordpress and real estate theme to traction.

If your site grows, you can always move away from wordpress.

So that suggests WordPress can't handle big sites?

Custom = flexibility
Wordpress = stability

You might want to change functionality that could potentially get overwritten in a wordpress future update.

If your looking for a hands of blog or commerce site, wordpress is great. But if YOU are going to develop it, you are better off from scratch, as you'll learn much more.

Hi, it depends. what is your budget? are you going to develop it by yourself? how many developers are in this? how much time do you have for developing this? and ... . I had the same issue.
with WordPress, you can do almost anything and also handle the big stuff. but you have to do this in Wordpress's way. there are a lot of tools for flexibility, SEO, speed optimization, caching, etc that you can use to boost your website but for some of them you have to pay or develop yourself but there are a few situations you may encounter that WP can address that. WP is fast enough, mature enough, stable enough but in some situations like distribution you can do better with something else.
If you have time and budget I suggest starting from scratch. I choose this for my case and I developed my website with JAMStack, It's far more optimized, cheap than WordPress but it took a lot of time and learnings for me. in the end I think WP's way is always easier, faster because of the community and the tools that are available.
