I would like to put on a site a tool to understand position of a site related to some keywords. From where should I begin to develop it?

First of all you should check with those kind of tools that people are using these days. If you do not know how it works then .. you better stop now

I would like to develop one of such simple tools you find on some sites to check fastly your position on Google. I'd need some advices regarding where to find API and which critical points there are to develop this function.
