Came across this tweet by Glen Allsopp, a long-time SEO and marketing guru. His website, Detailed.com, has been acquired by Ahrefs.

For those who don't know, Glen was the last well-known guru who was still blogging about search marketing, though he had pivoted to marketing reports and analysis instead of focusing purely on SEO.

Seems like all the OGs of the SEO/Marketing space from 2008-2015 (Woodward, Backlinko, etc) have disappeared or are no longer actively involved in blogging, courses, and coaching.

The future of SEO looks increasingly bleak.

The market has expanded to so much more than just seo and this new ai geo could be big blow to pure seo experts so good for him selling and probably getting out at the right time and getting maximum dollars possible than waiting and lowering the value even more :)

P.S. If his installs are still growing, i guess aherf might just want to sell to more people but personally i don't think that's the reason cuz he wouldn't just become an employee if the business was growing fast.

Used to read his newsletter sometime ago. Very knowledgeable guy and useful information he shares. Never got to use his tool. I'm happy for him. But the plugin remain free indefinitely is not very likely. Ahrefs would definitely find a way to recoup some of that acquisition cost.

Honestly, it's less about SEO being "bleak" and more about it maturing. The game moved from technical hacks to actually understanding what people really want to see

Yeah, you're right. The marketing landscape has changed before and will continue to do so. New avenues will open up while others fade into oblivion. As someone who's been around these parts since 2008, it's just my nostalgia speaking.

Good on him for getting something out of it.

Mindsets of people will really have to shift if they want thrive in SEO 2026+.

True, with Detailed now under Ahrefs and most OGs stepping back, indie SEO voices are fading. SEO’s future feels more tool-driven than community-driven.
